2 Corinthians 12:9 – My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
When people get sick or have accidents, people used to believe that God was “paying them back” for something really bad they had done. According to that way of thinking, a hospital is comparable to God’s prison, where inmates make up for their sins by becoming ill.
But that is incorrect. In the hospital, God doesn’t punish us for our transgressions. On the cross, He already punished Christ for them. There is no more money owed to us.
God has other, good reasons for our illnesses. He occasionally provides us with a hint, but we don’t always know what they are. Paul was informed that his illness would strengthen his faith. Paul had to place all of his trust in the Lord because he was unable to depend on himself during his illness.
Likewise, it is for us. A hospital stay can serve as a reminder of how frail we are on the inside as well. Then, we will be more prepared to put all of our faith in God alone for every blessing of body and soul. We are powerless, but he is absolute power. We will learn the lesson of hospitals if we learn to place all of our faith in him and none in ourselves.
Prayer:
Lord God and Savior, help me to learn how to completely rely on you and you alone. Amen.
